Margaret J. Burks
Summers


Margaret June Burks Summers left this life to be with
her Lord on May 29, 2005, in Edmond, OK. She was born on October 13, 1918,
in Salpulpa, OK, to Newton Adams and Bertha Medley Keenan. The family
moved to Pauls Valley in the 1930’s where Margaret graduated from high
school. She later graduated from Draughan’s School of Business in Oklahoma
City.
In 1939, she married John Carter Burks and mothered two sons: John Carter
Burks II and James Floyd Burks. She worked as well for Republic Natural
Gas. Margaret was always a devout Catholic and was extremely active in
establishing St. Catherine of Sienna Catholic Church in Paula Valley in
1950. She was very proud to be the first President of St. Catherine’s
Altar Society.
In 1958, the family moved to Southern California where both sons were
serving in the military. Margaret would later become Executive Secretary
for the Joy Precipitation Company and travel the country, organizing the
company’s annual meetings and retreats. She retired in 1983 and returned
to Oklahoma City where she worked part time for the Oklahoma Employment
Commission.
Margaret Burks Summers loved her family and was exceptionally proud of the
accomplishments of her sons and grandsons. She was an avid sports fan,
enjoyed crossword puzzles, knitting and crocheting, and loved playing
games with her family, which, in fact, she nearly always won.
She was preceded in death by her husband and her son James Floyd Burks.
Surviving family includes John C. and Sally Burks of Edmond;
daughter-in-law Doris Burks, of Downey, CA; grandsons John C. and Trina
Burks of Edmond; Brian and Kristi Burks of Chino Hills, CA and Michael
James Burks of Downey, CA.; three great-grandchildren, Brandon, Matthew
and Sarah Burks. She is also survived by her sister, Grace Patterson,
Perris, CA, one niece and two nephews.
Funeral services will be held Thursday, June 2, 2005 at 10:00 am at the
St. Catherine's Catholic Church officiated by Fr. Mike Vaught. Funeral
arrangements and burial at the Mt. Olivet Cemetery are under the direction
of Stufflebean-Coffey Funeral Home.
