In Loving Memory Of

Goldia Maria Selby Shumate

Goldia Selby Shumate born September 17, 1910, died October 24, 2004. She was born in Foster, Oklahoma, the first of eight children, to Grover and Luella Selby. Upon graduation from Maysville High School, she worked in several jobs while obtaining a two-year business degree. She then began a career of working for insurance agencies first in Pauls Valley then Oklahoma City, Tulsa and finally in California. She married Ralph Shumate December 31, 1944 while he was on duty with the Navy in Norfolk, Virginia. After Ralph’s death in 1960, Goldia became a world traveler and visited many exotic locations returning with many pictures and tall tales. She was originally a member of the Pauls Valley First Christian Church and continued her faith with that denomination as she moved to various locations. In 1998, she and her sister Cherokee Wade moved to Houston to be closer to her niece. They spent many a day remembering the events of their childhood while growing up on the farm.

She is survived by her niece Billie Robbins Holstein and her husband Edward Dwight Holstein, brothers G. Cleveland Selby, and Lindell Selby, nieces Marsha H. Scott, Sandy S. Norton, Linda S. Thomas, nephew Bobby Selby, and many cousins in and around Garvin County.

Honorary pallbearers will be Dr. E. L. Wilson, Sr., Dr. E. L. Wilson, Jr., Mr. R. T. Ramsey and Mr. Ott Blackwood.

A memorial service will be conducted by the Reverend Tracey Wilson at the Stufflebean Chapel beginning at 10:00 a.m. on Thursday, November 4, 2004. Interment will be in the Mt. Olivet Cemetery under the direction of Stufflebean-Coffey Funeral Home in Pauls Valley.
