Julia Shumate Sacra

Julia Shumate Sacra, of Pauls Valley was born February 27,
1921 in Pauls Valley, Oklahoma to Carl A. and Margaret (Matthews) Shumate.
She passed away June 25, 2005 at Pauls Valley, Oklahoma at the age of 84
years.
She graduated from Pauls Valley High School and was the Salutatorian and
Band Queen for the Class of 1938. In High School she was President of her
senior class and President of the Student Council her senior year.
On March 9, 1939 Julia Shumate was married to H. E. "Toots" Sacra in Pauls
Valley, Oklahoma.
Julia was very active in the Pauls Valley Alumni Association and was
awarded the Pauls Valley Alumni of the Year Award. Since the formation of
the Pauls Valley Alumni Association, she served in many capacities
including program committee and the featured performer for many programs.
At the presentation of the Alumni Award it was noted that for over 50
years she and her husband, H. E. 'Toots' Sacra, had been involved in
virtually every community project from parades to scouts. She loved to
dance and to entertain, not only for her family but for many public
performances. To her, life was a dance with a quick, lively step.
She established and was the chairman of the Annual Alumni Golf Tournament.
She was very proud of being from Pauls Valley and acting as a one women
'Chamber of Commerce' for the town. Julia was also very supportive of the
Pauls Valley Panthers and attended all of the High School games until her
health began to fail her.
Julia was a devoted mother and wife and was a member of First United
Methodist Church.
She was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, H. E. Sacra on May
26, 2000; and three brothers, Carl Shumate, Jr., Bill Shumate and Joe
Shumate; 1 daughter, Carol Ann Burris-Worley.
Surviving family include one son, John Sacra and his wife, Jeannie of
Tulsa; one daughter, Meri Roark and her husband, Don of Edmond; a
sister, Margaret Sacra Brew of Pauls Valley; 8 grandchildren, Jeff &
Shelley Sacra, Ryan & Crystal Sacra, Damon & Mary Catherine Sacra, Traci &
Mark Miller, Billy Tarwater, Shannon Larson, Matt & Renee Burris and Mark
Burris; 10 great-grandchildren, one sister-in-law, Anna Lee Shumate of
Pauls Valley; and numerous nieces and nephews.
In lieu of flowers the family requests that memorials may be sent to
Valley Hospice at 100 Valley Drive in Pauls Valley, Ok. 73075; or to The
Alzheimer's Association (envelopes are available at the Stufflebean-Coffey
Funeral Home in Pauls Valley).
Funeral services will be held 2:00 PM on Tuesday, June 28, 2005 at the
First United Methodist Church officiated by Dr. Robert J. Kanary. Burial
will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery under the direction of Stufflebean-Coffey
Funeral Home.
