In Loving Memory Of

Irene Layton

Irene Johnston Layton passed away on Sunday, March 23, 2008 in Casper, Wyoming. Irene was born March 3, 1903 and was 105 at the time of her death.

Irene was a loyal and loving wife, mother and grandmother and looked forward to her summer visits with her grandchildren, where she always had fresh home-grown vegetables from her garden. During the winter she would quilt and has made several quilts that will remain in her family for generations to come. She quilted until she was 100.

Irene moved from Morgan, Texas and made her way to Oklahoma by wagon at an early age. Her father, Carlos Ambrose and mother, Elizabeth Jane Johnston made their living through the railroad and also in farming. She picked cotton at a young age and continued throughout the first years of her marriage to Aubrey Layton until she had her sons, Russell Lowell and Robert Keith Layton. She would often ask people if they had ever picked cotton, commenting that it was very hard work. The Layton's raised their family in several small Oklahoma cities, finally settling in Paoli, Oklahoma where they remained until Aubrey died in 1978. After staying there for several years, Irene's family encouraged her to move to Oregon where she lived with her grandson, Ron. Irene then decided to move to Casper to be close to her only surviving son, Keith Layton. She remained in Casper until her death.

She is survived by her son, Keith and his wife, Alelia Layton, grandchildren Ron Layton and his wife, Wanda, Karla Stanley, Dee Irwin and her husband, Steve, Lori Layton and Mike Layton and his wife, Argeri. She is also survived by nine great-grandchildren and five great-great-grandchildren.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, March 27, 2008 at 2:00 pm at Stufflebean Chapel of Remembrance. Interment will be at Paoli Cemetery under the direction of Stufflebean-Coffey Funeral Home.

Dear Keith and Family,

My deepest sympathies in the loss of your mother and grandmother.  The write up was lovely.  I watched Irene quilt and was amazed at how steady her hands were.  I know you have some beautiful legacies of her work.  God bless as each of you return home.  Love and prayers, Virginia Fulton, friend of Anna Pearl.
