In Loving Memory Of

Walter W. Horton

Walter Wallace "Buck" Horton, of Norman was born May 11, 1916 in Bixby, Oklahoma to Emory Osborn and Margaret (Ohler) Horton.

"Buck" passed away December 22, 2005 at Norman, Oklahoma at the age of 89 years.

He began a tour of duty in the U. S. Army in World War II on September 26, 1942 and served in battles and campaigns in Southern France, GO 33 WD 45; Rome-Arno Rhineland, GO AO WD 45, and Central Europe, GO 48 WD 45. He was discharged at Camp Chaffee, Arkansas on October 25, 1945.

He and Dora Rose were married in Maysville, Oklahoma on October 1, 1947.

Walter earned the nickname of "Buck" from breaking horses as he was especially fond of horses and was a real cowboy. He worked as Physical Plant Supervisor at the Pauls Valley State School from 1946 and retired in 1986. He faithfully attended the Pauls Valley Church of the Nazarene where he served in various capacities. He moved from Perry, Oklahoma to Garvin County in 1935 and later made his home in Pauls Valley in 1946. In 2001 he moved to Norman to be closer to his daughters.

Buck was a lifetime member of the Veterans of World War II and The American Legion.

Buck was preceded in death by his wife of 39 years, Dora Rose Horton, on April 10, 1986; parents, Emory and Margaret Horton; two brothers, Forrest Horton and an infant brother; a sister, Lillian Pauline Horton and a brother-in-law, Kenneth Abbott.

Surviving family include his daughters, Sondra Horton Bivens and her husband, James Monty Bivens, of Moore and Linda Horton Short and her husband, Rick Short, of Norman; five grandchildren, Jeffrey Short and his wife Ginger, Andrea Short Hart and her husband, Bradley, James Matthew, Philip and Christin Bivens; two brothers, Earl Horton and his wife, Pauline, of Forney, Texas and Herman Horton and his wife Bobby, of Oklahoma City; one sister, Margaret (Horton) Abbott, of Moore; as well as four nephews, seven nieces, and their families.

Visitation on Monday, December 26, 2005, will be usual time beginning at 9:00 am with a special visitation for the family to receive friends between 4:00 pm and 6:00 pm.

Funeral services will be held Tuesday, December 27, 2005 at 2:00 pm at Stufflebean Chapel. Interment will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery under the direction of Stufflebean-Coffey Funeral Home.
