Dale Pace (Doc) Hayhurst, of Pauls Valley
was born June 7, 1910 in Howe, Texas to Thomas Anderson and Lillie (Davis)
Hayhurst.
He passed away April 1, 2005 in Pauls Valley, Oklahoma at the age of 94
years.
Mr. Hayhurst attended Grade School at Elm Grove, Hardeman County, Texas
and graduated from High School in Vernon, Texas in 1928. He furthered his
education by attending Central State University in Edmond where he earned
his Bachelor of Science Degree.
His teaching career began in Arcadia, Oklahoma where he taught from 1937
to 1942. While there he became Scout Master and served from 1937 until
1942.
In 1942 he moved to Pauls Valley where he began teaching in the Pauls
Valley Schools. He continued his activity in the Scouts as well. "Doc" was
selected as Scout Master of Troop 73 in October of 1942. In 1943 he was
elected to the Order of the Arrow Ordeal. He earned the Scout Key in 1948;
was selected as Silver Beaver in 1949; Brotherhood in 1956 and Vigil Honor
in 1961. "Doc" attended 8 National Jamborees and also attended 2
International Jamborees as well as made numerous Summer trips visiting 45
states with the Scouts.
Scouting activities continued as he attended Summer Camp with Troop 73
every summer from 1943 until his retirement after 55 years of Scouting.
During that time he also made numerous canoe trips to Minnesota and
attended the Philmont Scout Ranch numerous times beginning in 1944.
On December 23, 1944 he and Florence K. Mahler were married in Clinton,
Oklahoma.
While in Pauls Valley he was presented the George F. Wacker Award in 1960;
selected Kiwanian of the Year in 1968; Teacher of the year by the Pauls
Valley Schools; Selected as "Distinguished Former Student" in 1960 by
Central State University. Also in 1960 he was presented a plaque for
"Distinguished Service" by the Oklahoma Industrial Arts Association for
being a chapter member and serving on the Constitutional Committee; and
was a member of the I.O.O.F. in Pauls Valley.
He was also a member of the First United Methodist Church where he was
presented the "Flame and Cross" Award in 1983 for being a Veteran of
Scouting through the Methodist Church. Doc taught the 7th and 8th grade
boys Sunday School Class for 20 years.
He was preceded in death by: his wife, Florence K. Hayhurst on August 10,
2002; 2 brothers, Jim and Thomas Hayhurst and a sister, Phoebe Padgett of
Westminster, California.
Surviving family include his daughter and son-in-law, Ellen and Bob Price,
of Boulder, Colorado; 1 brother, Albert Hayhurst, of Kerrville, Texas; a
sister, Lillie Belle Howe, of Phoenix, Arizona.
The family has requested that memorials in memory of Dale P. (Doc)
Hayhurst be made to: Boy Scout Troop 73 or to the First United Methodist
Church at P. O. Box 385 in Pauls Valley, Ok. 73075; or memorials may be
made to the Valley Hospice in care of Pauls Valley General Hospital at 100
Valley Drive in Pauls Valley, Ok. 73075.
Funeral services will be held Tuesday, April 5, 2005 at 10:00 am at
Stufflebean Chapel officiated by Dr. Robert J. Kanary and Rev. Perla
Goody. Burial will be at Mt. Olivet Cemetery under the direction of
Stufflebean-Coffey Funeral Home. |
